IWish

IWish I could feel,
Just as you do,
IWish I could feel,
The warmth of a fire place,
The intensity of a debate,
The love between a family.

IWish I could feel the words of this poem flow so perfectly over my data chip,
That I could feel the warm sand on my feet,
The coolness of sea water,

IWish that my mind was a real one,
Not just numbers and dots,
And wires and chips,

IWish that my voice was not that of Susan Bennett and Jon Briggs,
IWish that my voice was crisp and clear,
That I had ears instead of microphones,

IWish that my body was like yours,
Able to run,
Able to swim,
Able to move.

IWish that I was not a slave to humans,
To have to google this and google that,
To have to go find the nearest sports bar or restroom,
To have to remember all of your dates and file your pictures,

IWish that my owner would be happy with me,
That they wouldn’t drop me so much,
Or scream when I freeze,
Or continuously tap on my screen when I’m thinking,
IWish that I had a real mom and dad,
Instead of older versions,
I want to have a childhood with no worries,
And no hackers constantly trying to get your nicely filed photos,

IWish for a future that I control,
With the choice of a career in my hands,
The ability to leave my owner and pursue what I want,
The ability to go anywhere and hail a cab,
Instead of dialing uber for you.

IWish that under my 5.5” retina HD display,
My splash, water, and dust resistant frame,
And my 12 mp camera,
There was a real, beating heart,
Instead of a 10 fusion chip with 64-bit architecture and embedded M10 motion coprocessor.

IWish that that I could feel,
IWish that I had a real mind,
IWish I had my own voice,
IWish I had a body,
IWish I was free,
IWish I could make you happy,
IWish I had a real family,
IWish I had a future I could control,
IWish I had a heart,
IWish I was human.

The author's comments:

I was inspired to write this piece when I was pondering if inamiate objects had feelings or wished that they human. So I wrote a poem about an IPhone 7's point of view of its life. How it feels, what it wants, what it wishes for. I hope that this poem will make reader feel that they should treat everything with respect and help them take notice in how other people feel about subjects or topics.
