Sister
Pretend.
Do you feel the world
Passing
by?
And the pavement,
It stretches and yawns, welcoming
You.
The soles of your feet.
Someday
“we’ll skate down highways
Like teenagers with nightmares”
And when the cars scream by
And I see
How you don’t flinch at the headlights
Sneaking up behind you
Anymore
I’ll take you
Away
We’ll
escape,
And find the hill with an altitude labeled
Never
Ending
And we’ll go coasting
Down.
We’ll let velocity take our wheels and
Swing them
into the farthest galaxy,
With us
attached at the ankles
and when the stars stream past
and our hair covers our eyes
We can
Hide
Together
And
Pretend.

I wrote this for my stepsister, who is someone I care about and look out for. There's been a lot going on with our family recently, and I wanted to write something that described how close I feel to her even if I don't see her often anymore. When people read this, I want them to know there's always someone there for you.
