Cliff Jumper
This was it.
He had left me,
For someone else.
What had I expected?
I had been warned
But I didn’t listen.
They had said
“Only fools will fall”
But I didn’t listen.
I walk beside the cliffs,
By the sea.
Sobbing.
Remembering.
Forgetting.
And somehow,
I felt better.
But not good enough
To live on without him.
I kick a rock
Off the edge.
Just to see how far
The fall would be.
The rock falls,
It falls into the crashing waves below.
But what was there to be afraid of?
Everyone I ever
Loved or cared about
Were waiting for me
On the other side.
I stop and
Look over the edge.
I think of all the pain
Love
Laughter
Screams
Sobs.
I close my eyes.
Then I jump.
As you fall,
You see the waves
They crash against the cliff
The sound echoing in your ears
Everything is more vivid
and in a way, beautiful
You realize that people can wait
You aren't ready to pass that gate
You feel the water swallow you whole
It slapped against your back
You think, this is life
it is gorgeous
but it isn't painless
You fight, the waves pull you under
You're fingertips reach the surface
The air whips beside them
But that isn't all
A hand reaches out to you
It gives you a second chance
And this time, you know you let it go to waste
