To my little girl with love…
Ever since you were young,
Your mother and I ,
Cradled you in our caressing arms.
Every time you were under our watchful gaze.
Oh! I love you with all my heart.
Yet, now, you are growing into
A beautiful young lady
You’re a little caterpillar no more.
You are safe in your cocoon now,
But it’s almost time for you,
To come out of the cocoon
And transform into a beautiful butterfly.
You will be free to explore
The whole wide world beyond.
But know, the world is huge,
It’s not always filled with good.
With good, comes evil too.
The world beyond
Is filled with virtue and vice,
But you have to know, how to be wise.
You should stay strong.
You must learn to stand on your own feet.
Even while looking back
You must march forward.
If you learn to find yourself
In this tangling mass of figures so huge,
Then know, the world can be
Beautiful as well.
You can make it so beautiful too.
Always remember, our guidance and advice
And never stray from the right path of life.
Go on, create a new path, so wonderful
And leave a trail
That millions can follow.
Yes, leave a mark
On the sands of time,
Make yourself shine.
For, there’s no greater achievement
Than you making us proud
And holding our heads high,
No greater happiness for us.
Don’t let anyone put you down,
Show them your true worth.
For, you are so precious
To your mother and I,
More precious than a million pieces of gold.
Know, wherever we may be,
You’ll always be in my heart,
My sweet little girl.

The author's comments:

Teenage is a time where we are neither an innocent child nor a mature adult. It is a time when we have to slowly step out of the shadow of our parents, while still respecting them and be independent and shine. It is a transition we all have to face, for only in change is there growth. Reflecting on this, I realised the time was coming to step out of the protective cocoon to turn into a butterfly. I put myself in my parents' shoes and thought about the emotions and concerns they may feel during such am important stage of life. I imagined a father writing a letter to his daughter, a letter of love, concern, guidance and wisdom.

Thank you so much Aunty! Your kind words really do mean a lot. It is really due to the love and support I have received from many special people in my life. It's always interesting to try and think from someone else's point of view.

Good one Ananya! It's really great to think from your parents side, especially in this age.
Am really proud and happy seeing your talent.
