Where I'm From
I am from saving frogs trapped in the window well,
crisp summer nights while watching the fireflies light mason jars,
and catching darting grasshoppers in my mother’s favorite Tupperware.
I am from hammers hitting house construction;
a green castle from the eyes of a five-year-old.
From running down gravel driveways at the end of a school day,
not forgetting to climb on the archaic rocks first.
I am from my mother’s highlights and happy crows feet; trying to hide.
From Nana having crisp Italian bread,
prompting us to try the heel.
I am from piggy back rides on living room carpet,
begging for another before bedtime.
I am from days of travelling car games;
refusing to fall asleep during eight hour rides…
From forced summer homework, but voluntary determination.
I am from harsh words of my father saying “Suck it up.”
And from my Nana humming “Ma Nina Bella” when tucked into bed.
From my mom softly singing “Travelin’ Soldier” by the Dixie Chicks in the car,
thinking I couldn’t hear her.
I am from work, and what-if’s,
from not knowing what I’m worth.
From taking leaps and trusting processes.
From determination put to work, surprising myself with the results.
From young eager eyes not realizing what things she’s going to accomplish.
