Family Hike
Under a light, pale blue sky,
the sun glistens its rays onto snow and ice.
The path beneath my boots sparkles and crunches
like unrefined sugar.
The temperature sinks below twenty degrees
and the breeze freezes our cheeks as
we walk each step.
We talk about random topics
and laugh together.
Our dog runs along the icy trails in front of us
and slows down whenever he feels too distant.
Some people would choose not to go on such a cold hike.
Some people would rather stay inside
by their toasty fireplace, sipping hot chocolate.
But not me.
It is a quality time when we slip on ice, laughing at each other
as my dog sprints back to us in the meantime.
I enjoy going on the bittersweet hikes in January with
my family.
