I Am Immortal
I am immortal.
I will live forever
Young, carefree, breathing.
I will never die.
I will grow.
I want to be a scientist
Curious, discovering, learning
I will change the world.
I will fall in love.
Date until I find the perfect heart
Men, women, single, free
I will live happy.
I will have children.
Care and love them
Boy, girl, trans, adopted
They will be my family.
I will graduate school.
Be patient and learn,
Elementary, middle, high, college
I will earn my diploma.
It flies.
Through the air, merciless
Silver, round, fast
I saw nothing
Now I see blood.
I am cold.

I wrote this, inspired by the nationwide school walk-out that had happened on March 14th, 2018. While there are students who fear for their lives in school, growing anxious that they will be the next victims of gun violence, there are also students who still carry the idea that had been in children until they first learn the concept of death: that they are immortal, and death would never touch them.
