Why Didn't They Tell us
As a kid
You only want
One thing
I mean sure
You do want that
New barbie house
Or another pack of pokemon cards
But what you really want
Is to grow up
You want to be like those kids
The kids on your bus
The ones that say words
Words that
your mom refuses to hear
Words that
would result to soap in your mouth
Those words
You hear them say that and you think
I want to be like them
You see them laugh
And talk to their friends about a party
A party?
You want to go to a party now
You want to grow up
Be able to say bad words
And now
Go to parties
They talk about drugs and some other people
Drugs?
You thought
we were suppose to be drug free
Now
You are grown up
Or atleast kind of
Ok not really grown up
But close enough
You sit on the bus
And now you wonder
What was I thinking
Why did
I ever want to grow up
Why did
I think it was going to be fun
To be a teenager
The one you would always pick to be
When you played house
At recess with your friends
Why didn’t they tell us
That it’s nothing like the movies
That you aren't ever going to be popular
And the quarterback isn’t going to ask you to prom
Why didn’t they tell us
That although it seems like these are your friends
Most of them will grow up to haunt you
To spread rumors about your love life
And your home life
Why didn’t they tell us
That yeah you can wear makeup to school now
But soon it will be apart of you
And you won’t want to go anywhere without it
Because it is who you are
And if a pimple is showing
If your lashes aren’t longer
than their natural length
You are ugly
Why didn’t they tell us
That you probably won’t be invited to parties
That you’ll probably be sitting at home
Watching everyone's
Snapchat stories
Seeing how much fun they are having
How much they are getting wasted
At that party you weren’t invited to
That you’ll constantly ask yourself
“Why am I not good enough”
Why didn’t they tell us
That no matter what
We would compare ourselves
To everyone and anyone we see
No matter if we know them
Or if it’s a stranger on the streets
Why didn’t they tell us
That happiness is harder to find
That you have to find yourself
And happy feelings
At the same time
And that people aren’t happy
That suicide is a real thing
A thing that is happening
When we cant see it
Because we are too busy
Worrying about ourselves
And if we should raise our hand
If we know the answer
Or keep our mouth shut
Because we don’t want to be
A nerd
Why didn’t they tell us
That it’s crappy but
it’s also great
You'll meet people you trust
You’ll learn more for your future
You’ll find yourself
And most importantly
You will change the world
Sometimes I wish
I could tell them all
Tell them that everything said
Is true
I’m not popular
I’m self conscious
Everyone compares each other
And
I’m not invited to parties
But so is the majority of people I know
So would we be better
If they did tell us all that
Or should we just go back
And pretend it's nothing like that

This poem is about how as a kid we dream about growing up and being a teenager when in reality, it kinda sucks. It states that no one says the bad things about growing up. (Written for my schools poetry slam btw)
