Pop, squelch, the fridge door
A green striped beast emerges--
Watermelon time.

The author's comments:
Having watermelons in the summer is a family ritual of mine, going so far back that the various indications, auditory and otherwise, of it being time to enjoy the succulent green beast no longer stand out to me. Therefore, I wanted to explore the associations between the fruit and the sounds and actions that precede it to cement my memories of watermelon time with my parents while reminding readers to appreciate the little nuances of their own family traditions.
