Jaded

So raw, so stinging,

Gotta love that human feeling;

I don’t never feel nothin’,

So I cut myself just to feel somethin’.

Done dried my eyes up of all my tears,

Now I’m just sittin’ here with no more fears;

The destruction I once brought,

Is now coming back without thought.

I tore myself apart with Crack,

And now there ain’t no going back;

I didn’t care about nobody,

And I was fixin’ to fight everybody.

I even sold my little brother’s PlayStation,

So I could meet my dealer by the train station;

Momma learned of my habits and kicked me to the curb,

Right then an’ there I never felt so burned.

I broke into houses and robbed people in the street,

And anyone between the Crack and me would get beat;

I smashed and thrashed just to get by,

Because all I wanted was just that High.

Now I’m all alone and broken,

And the hug of the rain keeps my clothes soakin’.

My only friend is my switchblade,

Playing with it feels like I’m in an arcade.

The kiss of its cut takes me back,

To the times when I got high off Crack;

The sting makes me feel something,

Like the highs that had me jumping.

Ruined myself, and now I don’t feel nothing,

So I cut myself just to feel something;

So raw, so stinging,

Gotta love that human feeling.

The author's comments:

The speaker of the poem struggled with his addiction to Crack Cocaine. As a result of his addiction, he was eventually kicked out of his mother's house and turned to a life of crime to get by, all so he could fuel his drug addiction even further with the money he illicilty gained.

The speaker ruined all of his relationships with his addiction, and he is physically, mentally, and spiritually weak from heavy drug use.  The man is so ruined that he is no longer able to feel any emotion, and so, just to feel something, he cuts himself--which gives him a sensation of fun and feeling similar to the highs he had once felt.
