Pieces
If I told you that a flower bloomed in a dark room,
would you trust it?
I wish I found some better sounds
no one's ever heard.
I wish I had a better voice
that sang some better words.
I do the same thing I told you that I never would.
I told you I'd change, even when I knew I never could.
I'll never find the words to say I'm sorry,
but I'm scared to be alone.
Mi libertad no la quiero,
tampoco la vida e' soltero.
I don't wanna fall asleep, I don't wanna pass away,
I been thinking of our future, 'cause I'll never see those days.
I don't know why this has happened, but I probably deserve it,
I tried to do my best, but you know that I'm not perfect.
You better lose yourself in the music, the moment,
you own it, you better never let it go.
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow,
this opportunity comes once in a lifetime.
Everybody dies but not everybody lives.
Work all day, and then I wake up.
Work all day, and then I wake up.
Life goes on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and
on and on and on.

I am a high school student who is an avid listener of music. The work starts off with a contemplative question, asking “if a flower bloomed in a dark room, would you trust it?” The second stanza includes the regrets of the speaker using an apologetic and lamenting tone. The third stanza has a “carpe diem” theme, with every line urging the listener to be bold and unafraid. To me, the final stanza symbolizes the unending cycle of life. Even in the face of adversity, self-doubt, and fear, life goes on. One notable fact I want listeners to realize is that many of the poem’s lines are from very provocative songs. This music often perpetuates the indirect misogyny within our modern pop culture. However, I believe that these segments from dehumanizing songs are the most accurate mantras to life, because they see both the good and the bad of society: the unrelenting spirit and the depraved lyrics. I tried to pull small bits of wisdom from each song, hence the title “Pieces.”
