paper wings
you know they’re watching
waiting to see you fall.
the goal is miles away
of course you’d drop the ball.
first day of school
you’ve made your first impression.
try to hold your tears back.
at least you’ve learned a lesson.
so they say,
through their whispers and their laughter:
“she’ll falter on her paper wings
and crash the morning after.
wolf in sheep’s clothing
going solo forever after.”
twenty four hours later
you sit alone again
taking in their judgemental stares
no flaw goes unremembered.
maybe it’s the sight
of your brazen mane of curls.
maybe it’s the way
you aren’t like other girls.
either way, they say
through their whispers and their laughter:
“she’ll falter on her paper wings
and crash the morning after.
wolf in sheep’s clothing
going solo forever after.”
third day in
just a few hundred left to go.
a smile adorns your face
but it’s all just for show.
pretend you don’t hear
the insults and the jeers.
because no one would care
about your flowing tears.
all your mistakes come back
to haunt you at night
magnified in the darkness
setting your regrets alight.
on and on they say
through their whispers and their laughter:
“she’ll falter on her paper wings
and crash the morning after.
wolf in sheep’s clothing
going solo forever after.”
four’s a lucky number
but fortune appears so lost.
fake it till you make it,
if only there wasn’t a cost.
your tears have run dry
and the sneers start to fade.
but just how long
can you keep up this charade?
going solo
on paper wings
smile, don’t falter
don’t cry
don’t let them see your blunders.
unable to escape reality,
your humiliation thunders.
because no, no, no.
all you have are paper wings.
wolf in sheep’s clothing,
going solo forever and ever after.
because no, no, no.
all you have are paper wings.
wolf in sheep’s clothing,
going solo forever and ever after.
wolf in sheep’s clothing,
flying on paper wings,
going solo forever and ever after.
