Hey, Shoulder-to-Lean-On
‘Don’t worry about hurting me, I’m easy-going
You’re forgiven for this time and the next’ –
I know you hide behind those smiley faces
You type at the end of every text.
You try to keep me happy,
You’d rather take the stress yourself
And you always shut down before the ‘how are you?’
Put your feelings on the shelf.
Hey, shoulder-to-lean-on,
Who’s looking after you?
Who’s shining like the sun
When your sky’s grey instead of blue?
I wonder who holds you up
Every time you help me to my feet
Hey, steadfast angel,
Who’s giving you their seat?
I’m crossing at the streetlights
And you come over and take my hand
But before I can thank you
You say ‘no need, you made no demand’.
If that’s the case do I need permission
To ask who stands up for you?
Who’s cooking your meals, who’s saying thanks
For all these little things you do?
Hey, shoulder-to-lean-on,
Who’s looking after you?
Who’s shining like the sun
When your sky’s grey instead of blue?
I wonder who holds you up
Every time you help me to my feet
Hey, steadfast angel,
Who’s giving you their seat?
How long are you going to ignore those tears
And tell me it doesn’t hurt at all?
Day and night you’re on your own –
Behind the scenes from spring to fall.
Hear me, oh faithful listener,
Will you answer just one more question of mine?
If in the darkness, you are my light,
Then please…can I be thine?
