Hard Things
No one gets any new things anymore
Mama, I know that you understand
Please, don’t leave us at this school all alone
Please stay
Don’t go
I just want you to be healed
and those men not to hurt us no more
This girl doesn’t want to see another friend get beat up
Please stay
Don’t go
The old man wants our land and will do-o anything for it
I don’t know what happened
but all of a sudden
our cotton was up in flames
I’ll do what I have to do, Mary...and so will you

This song is inspired by the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. That book tells of the hardships Cassie, the main character, and her family faces during a racist time. I tried to capture the feelings of the little during the troubling time.
