Ashes to Ashes: Or Not

A beast of yore once roared, escaped a knife
his will to live was useless facing death.
His fiery blood caught flame and lost its life
he tried to roar as blaze devoured his breath.
His soot, long passive, now a pen that dares
to sketch the locks of hair, the arc of necks.
New figures, drawn from dust, live without cares
on fragile parchment scorched by shades and flecks.
Some figures, drawn with skill, can dwarf compare;
they throb with life and vim, and gleam with wit.
Their skin may glow as bright as their forebear
yet fingers never burn by touching it.
New lives can come from any death’s remains
yet few are apt to life’s ordeals and pains.

The author's comments:
I wanted to convey how life is a cycle: people die, but their deaths create new life (whether of people or emotion) or alter existing lives.
Written in iambic pentameter.
