A Eulogy to the Optimism of Youth
It was pouring rain at the funeral
Seattle’s send off: a farewell of tears
I stood to eulogize the burial
Optimism of youth lost over years
“Once, it was rosy innocent,” I droned
“Now withered dry at life’s merciless hand.”
A child piped on her shining saxophone
The dreadful tune of hope’s bitter demand
I used to be her, that blind, hopeful girl
But life fights until it’s been defeated
Life traps you in its tornado’s black swirl
It chokes until what’s you has receded
Hence we mourn the optimism of youth
Butchered and broken and lost in the truth
