The Catcher in the Rye is a novel written by J.D. Salinger in 1951, It focuses on a young man named Holden who got kicked out of his school in Pennsylvania and is now returning to his home in New York.

Although the book was originally published for adults it has grown in popularity among younger teenage readers because of the themes of rebellion and teenage angst. This comes up a lot through the book in many ways such as him always fighting back and resisting his teachers whether it was his current teacher, Spencer, at Pencey or his high school teacher Mr. Antolini, back in New York. It also shows in the way he treats himself when he gets back, like when he gets a prostitute or the nonstop smoking. His angst comes out in these questionable choices and his rebellion in his lack of connection with adult mentors.

I would say that it falls under the genre of realistic fiction and that anybody of any age or gender would like it. The Catcher in the Rye is a great book. I think the intriguing storyline and a great writing style combined with the self narrative and the deep and  controversial message is what makes it such a classic that thrills teens through many generations.
