Messenger by Louis Lowry is an amazing companion, or sequel to The Giver and Gathering Blue. Matty, main character, lives with a blind caretaker, Seer. Things are changing in his village. People have changed, they have traded away parts of them that they can never get back. Matty and Seer fight to keep things the same. They fight to welcome immigrants. Things are not only changing in Matty’s village, but people are discovering their talents. The theme of the book is Never Give Up. Matty is The Messenger, he travels far to other villages and delivers news. The theme is exemplified, when Matty is delivering a message, the Forest is unwelcoming. It appears as if the Forest does not want him to deliver the messages, but Matty persists and delivers the messages. I highly recommend Messenger, if I you enjoyed reading The Giver or Gathering Blue.
