Where the Red Fern Grows
The book, Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, is an inspiring book that pulls at your heartstrings. It entails a young boy named Billy who goes on numerous adventures with two hound dogs that he loves with all his heart. The characters in this story are Billy’s four sisters, his mom, his dad, and his grandpa who owns a store and is very close with Billy. Billy’s grandpa is a big reason that he was able to buy the dogs. This incredible story takes place in the rocky Ozarks of Oklahoma, where Billy explores miles of forests and mountains. Rawls starts by introducing Billy’s love for dogs, and how Billy worked for two years selling vegetables, fishing bait, and berries just so he can have the dogs. His work pays off and he gets the dogs, and together they go on countless hunting adventures and catch many raccoons. Billy’s name became known throughout the country. He even placed second in a tournament and won even more money for his family. Success continues to find Billy, but there is tragedy throughout this book too, and when unexpected events happen unexplainable magic occurs with it, that must be read to be found out and understood.
This book is a must read for all ages, and there are many great lessons to learn from this book. Rawls conveys many themes through this book like how hard work always pays off, and respect to all is very important. This book helps us realize how lucky we are in today’s world, because Billy worked for two year to get his dogs and it shows just how dedicated he was, whereas we are given so much, and I for one take for granted everything I’m given.
I love this book because there is so much emotion tied into this book, and you can tell that Bille lives for his dogs, and his dogs live for him. This book is hard to put down because Rawls adds many complex plot twist which keeps you at the edge of your seat. I recommend this book for everyone because I loved how the author is able to demonstrate Billy’s love for the dogs. The emotion that is tied into this book is what makes it so great. This book can make you smile, laugh, and cry. This book will truly change your life if you read it.
