Animal Farm is an allegorical masterpiece written by legendary author George Orwell. The story of Animal Farm begins with the dream of freedom from oppression, a dream that starts with the pig Old Major. The pig envisions a world in which animals know no master but themselves. He tells his dream and the animals take action, they hold their own against humans, and try to work for themselves. Three pigs rise to leadership, Squealer, an unmatched oratorical genius; Snowball, a smart and cunning pig; and Napoleon, a manipulative and fear-inducing ruler.  The newfound power leads to corruption and paranoia, the story follows through as the pigs manipulate and exploit the “lesser animals.”.

Napoleon is a ruthless and manipulative leader, you do not want to be on his bad side. He wants his people to be free, but he also is corrupted by power and paranoia. He represents most tyrants and cruel leaders. Squealer is a smart and unmatched speaker, he is able to rally and persuade troops with ease. He is one of the reasons why the revolution starts, and why Napoleon can maintain political favor. There is another main character, his name is Boxer. Boxer is the muscle of the farm, and unlike the others, he is a horse, strong and sturdy, he represents the overworked lower class. Though he is not nearly as smart as the pigs, he is a gentle giant and will do anything for his fellow animals. Snowball is a smart pig who is very good and unintentionally making Napoleon fearful of losing his power. Snowball causes some carnage and paranoia throughout the farm.

This book is a book that makes you think hard after reading, while also painting an easy picture to understand, history buffs and book lovers alike can agree that this is one of not only Orwell’s, but literatures best novels. The book itself is clever and political, focusing on power, corruption, and fear, and when you learn the history of the novel, it opens up new doors of understanding. The book set on a small farm is the perfect place for a large story on a small scale. The characters are beautifully written and have very complex and real issues. Orwell seamlessly depicts how fear can make others tear each other apart and cause people to go mad. Orwell also paints a clear picture of how power corrupts even the noblest of causes.   When it comes down to raw details, this is an interesting book for anyone that wants a thought provoker in the form of an allegory. This book is great for fans of history, and fans of politics. People should learn the history behind the book before reading, but it isn't necessary to enjoy the story, but after learning the hidden meaning, the novel is definitely worth a reread.
