Reading Scythe was similar to running a marathon. It was great in the beginning but after reaching the middle, it got difficult to progress. Scythe is written by Neal Shusterman and it’s a science fiction novel about 2 teenagers who become a Scythe’s apprentice and train to become a Scythe. Scythes are like an organization that keeps the human population stable since growing old is now in the past. Overall, I feel that Scythe isn’t really interesting after the beginning and I won’t recommend reading. 

Scythe was very interesting in the beginning as it was about 2 teenagers with different backgrounds training to be a Scythe. Citra was the girl with a great family and good background but Rowan was a mysterious boy with a bad background. Half way through the book, I feel that there were too many problems happening before they both had become a Scythe. There were times where they were about to become a Scythe but problems kept appearing and it killed the mood to see who becomes a Scythe. 

I think the main message of Scythe was to work hard even if the future is uncertain. Both Citra and Rowan’s future was uncertain but they did their work to become a Scythe. Citra didn’t really want to be a Scythe but still put in the work. While Rowan tried his best to be a Scythe because he had nothing else. Overall even if the future is uncertain, putting in work will determine your future. 

Rowan was a very unique character as he had a big change happen to him. In the book, he turns evil after a major event and that split the bond that Citra and Rowan had which made the story interesting. That helped the story find out who becomes a Scythe but the only way to know is reading the book. 

I wouldn’t recommend this book to teenagers because constantly the two main characters do things for each other that end up delaying who becomes a Scythe. I lost interest when problems like this kept happening as the only thing keeping me hooked was knowing who would become a Scythe. Although the book has a great story and a lot of plots, it wasn’t enough to keep me wanting more. If I were to recommend this book, I would definitely recommend it to those who like fillers before the dramatic ending.
