My Year of Rest and Relaxation, published in 2018 by Ottessa Moshfegh, is a fascinating book telling the life of a young adult and her surrounding relationships with people and her attempts to escape reality. The female lead leads a lot in getting to her goal of a year-long sleep, which she accomplished because of her gullible and horrible psychiatrist. As well as her bad friend who is jealous of her beauty and so strongly desires to be her. Along with the jealous friend she has, the female lead also has a relationship with a man much older than her. Ottessa thought very carefully when writing this book as she wrote what most of us feel, overwhelmed and tired. The main character only tries to escape the hard reality of being alone with no parent figure to guide her. Though this book can be somewhat triggering, some people might find it relatable and even comedic. Readers might relate to this text in different ways because of the many relationship issues it presents and even in the style that it's written. This book makes you empathetic towards her because of how bad you would feel knowing she had a parent figure to rely on. If you're a teen or a young adult, and you're looking for dark humor, it’ll definitely get a laugh out of you.
