Eragon by Christopher Paolini
ERAGON
Grab some third-person narrative, throw it in with action and medieval fiction complete with dragons and magicians, add adolescence and then mix for one of the best fiction books I've ever read.
Eragon, a fifteen-year-old farm-boy, finds a dragon egg in the nearby mountain range. He forces himself to care for the dragon. Going through many adventures, his dragon grows along with himself. He avoids the king and runs from soldiers to keep himself safe.
I would say this is the kind of book that will teach someone to think for himself or herself. Eragon learns to be independent, but when his teacher Brom dies, he never really knows what to do. He has a wayward traveling experience as he makes his way to the country's band of rebels. He joins them and learns about various things, including history and fighting.
