“If your parents have you for a reason, then that reason better exist. Because once it’s gone, so are you.” My Sister’s Keeper by Jodie Picoult was recommended to me by a friend. I loved the movie, so I already knew what the book was about, and I was curious to see if it did the movie justice. The story takes place in Providence, Rhode Island and it is about a thirteen year old girl named Anna who was only created to save her sisters life. She hires an attorney, Campbell Alexander, to file a lawsuit against her parents, Brian and Sara Fitzgerald. Anna seeks to become medically emancipated from her parents because she no longer wants to be a donor for her sister, Kate, who has leukemia. On top of all this, Brian and Sara must deal with their rebellious son, Jesse, Kate on her deathbed, and the Guardian ad Litem who has been assigned to Anna’s case, Julia Romano. The theme of this book is what is right and wrong because Anna is considered a “designer baby” and there are many people who believe this is wrong and unethical.

The book was a lot better than I anticipated. It wasn’t predictable, like many books I have read recently, so it kept me entertained. I liked how the author changed the point of view each chapter, so it kept you guessing. I also liked how she gave flashbacks in the chapter which gave you more insight into the characters. I strongly recommend this book because I was rarely bored. Each chapter something new and exciting would happen, such as Kate falling in love, or Jesse setting abandoned buildings on fire. I was really excited to get to the end because I really wanted to find out what happened to the characters and how their lives had turned out. I would definitely read another book by Jodie Picoult because My Sister’s Keeper was very well written.
