Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares


Picture yourself walking into a library or bookstore looking for a book and as you are scanning the shelves of your favorite author you see a bright red notebook, slipped into the other books. What would you do? Well obviously you would open it…right?! Well… that is what happen to Dash, in Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares written by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan.

It’s Christmas time in New York City, and Dash is just a normal sixteen year old boy - Iazy, defiant. His parents are divorced and they do not get along. As Dash opens the book he finds that it is filled with challenges and dares written by a sixteen year old girl by the name of Lily. Lily loves Christmas, not just because of the presents. She loves the lights and the big family get togethers. She started this notebook because she wants a boyfriend.

Dash’s parents are both with their boyfriend and girlfriend on Christmas vacation.Which Dash was not looking nor wanting to go so he lied to each parent saying he would be at the other parents house. So, Dash is home alone all by himself.

Will they ever meet? Will they be the “perfect” match? Will Dash be able to keep the lie from his parents? Will Dash keep playing? If so, how long? Will Lily get in trouble?

One problem readers might have with Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares, is it goes back and forth between character. It gets kind of confusing, because when you start reading about Dash then it goes straight to Lily and you have to go back to Dash and reread what happen.It’s just so abrupt and you will forget what he wrote in the notebook.

In this book,it is the great quotes that stood out the most such as, “Yes, girls want their princes,but boys also want their princesses.” This stood out because anyone could connect to this in a real life situation.

Reading this book really makes you smile and laugh because you can relate to what is happening the whole time throughout the book,because it’s like this long game of truth or dare and we have all played that at some point in our life.
