In the book Running With The Buffaloes by Chris Lear, you will learn what it means to be on a team. Not an after school social gathering sort of team, but more of a family. Led by Adam Goucher and Mark Wetmore, these Captains aren’t even viewed leaders on the team. They act more as parents to the Colorado men’s cross country team. Keeping athletes out of trouble, teaching them right from wrong, and most importantly; leading by example. The goal is clear, Goucher and Wetmore Parent their way to the NCAA championship for Goucher’s last shot at winning the biggest race of the season against the fastest collegiate athletes in the country. As a family, this team not only overcomes the injuries and pain of a distance runner, but are also forced to cope with the death of a teammate. The feeling of something missing plagues the cross country team and forces them to face a problem much bigger than any of them expected. Overcoming this would be the challenge of a lifetime for the runners. Will they pull together and run in memory of lost teammate? Or will they let the death of a dear friend drag them down and reduce them to nothing? With many obstacles and problems to face, this book is nothing but a motivational tale of what it means to be a distance runner. Anyone who enjoys the art of running would benefit from this book. It reminds me of my first state meet and brings back memories with my teammates, overcoming injuries, and also losing a teammate (Switched schools) Cover to cover, this book is a Ten out of Ten must read, you will not be able to put it down after you’ve started it.
