The Book Thief is a great story about what the world was like during World War 2. It portrays the life of an innocent little girl in the heart of it all. Liesel Meminger was an orphan in Nazi Germany during this period of history. She goes to live with foster parents after her mother could no longer care for her. Liesel’s brother froze to death on a train prior to this. This is when Liesel steals her first book, hence the name “The Book Thief”. She does this because it is the only thing she has to remember her brother by.

Sophie Nélisse does a great job as playing Liesel in the movie. However, there is a slight difference between the book and the movie. In the movie, Liesel’s hair was blonde but in the book, her hair was a more dirty blondish color. I also pictured Liesel as being more dirty and poor. The movie however beautified her character. Other than that, I feel that she did an exceptionally good job at playing Liesel.

The Book Thief is a heartwarming tale of love, friendship , and death. If you are into that kind of stuff, I highly recommend that you see this movie. It is a movie for the whole family that gives inside depth of what life was like during World War 2.
