Sunrise over Fallujah is a very exciting war book about a young man named Robin Perry, who enlisted in the army, went to Iraq, and joined the civil affairs. Throughout the book Birdy (Robin’s nickname) has encountered IEDs, firefights, and very interesting moments. Robin Perry has saved several lives without knowing it, all the way from a little kid to his commanding officer. The book’s setting takes place in Kuwait, Fallujah, Baghdad, and the outskirts of Baghdad. Walter Myers has incorporated a theme about how war changes people. Birdy used to be a very brave person. But when he entered the war in Iraq, he changed into a completely different person. Instead of being a brave and happy person Birdy changed into a shy and quiet person. He kept thinking about the people who loved him and what they would do if he died. Robin kept thinking about his friends dying and all he thinks about is how horrible this war is, little kids dying and mothers mourning over their sons dying in combat. I also think that Sunrise over Fallujah showed how all of the aspects of the downside of war, with all the dead bodies, sandstorms, explosions, and family tragedies affected the people caught in the crossfire between the U.S.and the enemies.

Sunrise over Fallujah is an outstanding war book. Walter Myers has done a very good job of incorporating surprises in this book. He has set a boy from Harlem, New York, in a war in Iraq and made a masterpiece. I think that Walter Myers has done a very good job at making a jaw dropping, nerve wracking book, that has won Walter Dean Myers an award and the right to call himself an amazing author. Also Walter Myers has done an outstanding job to have most of the book slow paced, but then all of a sudden, something very surprising would happen. Which kind of makes you wonder when you are reading when will another surprising part happen again. Which adds a puzzling side to the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in an amazing book with a very unique story and setting that is personal narrative, action, comedy, sadness, and a little bit of romance. Yes, this book has some romance in it, Also I think that mainly teenagers and maybe anyone older could read this because it can get PG-13 in this book sometimes. Overall I think this is one of the greatest war books I have read. Out of ten I would have to rate this an 8 or a 9.
