Columbine by Dave Cullen

This book was nothing like what I had heard about the Columbine shooting - and that made me keep reading. It is sad to see a book like this have the need to be written, but Dave Cullen wrote it well. I chose to read this book to know more about my school’s past and learn the truth that the media did not express. I discovered, Columbine was not easy to read. Not only was the book plainly centered around the the date, April 20, 1999, it gave readers the background of the shooters, victims, witnesses, and community. Cullen gave an insight of what truly happened, incorporating the past, present, and future in his writing. The book showed what lead up to the tragic day, the aftermath, and what is to come. Being a current student of Columbine High School, it surprises me that I know many of the settings described in the book. Some places remained, others were long ago removed. I found it hard to realize that a shooting ever occurred in Columbine, but I always knew it was true. I know that the event happened before I was born, yet, each time I stopped reading and closed the book, the thoughts of what I had read lingered in my mind throughout the day. I recommend Columbine to those who want information on what actually happened. This book wasn’t about two abused and bullied teens in search of revenge to the jocks. Dave Cullen’s words revealed what truly was behind the Columbine shooting.
