The Book Thief by: Markus Zusak
To begin, The Book Thief takes place in Nazi Germany in 1939, at the time of World War II when Hitler was ruling. Indeed, you should read this book because it shows that although there were tons of difficult trying challenges, love, kindness, trust, family, and friends still abide and mean everything. The Book Thief is filled with many interesting characters such as Liesel, a strong, brave, and intelligent girl who tries to get by in a world full of hate.
According to the website Random House, the Australian novelist Markus Zusak chose the subject manner of The Book Thief in part to share the stories his parents told him about growing up in Germany. He had written a story about a girl and her love to steal books. Although he never finished the book, one day as he asked his parents about living in Germany, he thought about his story he wrote about the girl. He thought it would be interesting to put the story about the girl, and the story he wrote about his parents together to make one book. This is how The Book Thief came to be. This book is so great it has been on the New York Times for over 230 weeks.
One reason why we love The Book Thief is because of the narrator-- Death.  From the website Wikipedia, Death describes both the beauty and the destruction of life in this era. He has a lot of human like qualities, but he will never be human. Even though Death is not human, he is definitely linked to all humanity. Death removes the souls and carries them away. For instance, in the book it states, “...their spirits came toward me, into my arms, and we climbed out of those shower facilities, onto the roof and up, into eternity’s certain breadth.”
Another reason why we loved The Book Thief was because of the character Liesel. Liesel shows great love throughout the book simply, to everyone. Liesel is a blonde German girl who had a beautiful smile that she never really showed. After her dad abandons her family, her brother dies, and doesn’t know where her mother is, he is forced to get put into a foster home. Her new family the Hubermanns take her in, and cares for her. Along her journey in these troubled times, Liesel steals books. Liesel’s love for books is beyond measure. She couldn’t read very well, so her adoptive father Hans teaches her. When you read The Book Thief, you read about Liesel’s love and kindness throughout the book, and how she survives life in Nazi Germany in World War ll.
In conclusion, you should read The Book Thief because although there are tons of difficult trying challenges, love, kindness, trust, family, and friends still abide and mean everything to them. While reading this book, you get to really understand the characters in the book and feel as if you were one of them. The Book Thief is an amazing book, and it is definitely a must read.
