Simon Glass lives a life all high school misfits dream of. In the book Shattering Glass written by Gail Giles, the complicated system of high school popularity is explored in a whole new way.

This book is set in B-Vale high school. It follows the story of a rich kid named everyone calls Young. Young’s friends are the stereotypical “populars” of the school. His friend Coop is B-Vale’s star quarterback, Bobster is the ladies man, and the newest kid to B-Vale is the charismatic yet mysterious Rob, who happens to be the most adored boy in school.

This book is the type of reading that anyone above the elementary school age could relate to. Whether you are/were popular or an underdog in high school this book speaks to all of us. With all the unexpected twists and turns it’s sure to keep you on your toes.

I think my favorite thing about this book was the way it was delivered. Many writers before Gail Giles have tried to capture the intricate and delicate balance of high school life and many have done well at doing so, but Giles does it in a whole new way. He takes it in a direction that I’ve never thought of in the past in that he uses his characters to upset this oh-so delicate balance.

This book is best described as disturbing. If you are intrigued by the psychology of high school drama, this book will take everything you thought you knew to another level. Anyone who has attended almost any level of schooling, high school in particular, could relate. This book is a must read and I would recommend it to almost anyone.
