“Trouble with mice is you always kill ‘em,” said George Milton to Lennie Small as they migrate to their new ranch at the beginning of the novella. This action-adventure book by John Steinbeck begins with our two main characters traveling to a new ranch after conflict from where they used to work. There, they deal with not only hard work, but the struggle of putting up with their fellow ranch hands. At the end of the story we see the biggest struggle that the two characters face as Lennie kills another mouse. I personally enjoyed the book because of its well written characters and it's brilliant storyline. Of Mice and Men is perfect for ages 13 and up if you want to read a great page turner.
I couldn’t put the book down toward the end because of how interesting it got. Also because of how fascinating it was, the book was fairly easy to comprehend and to concentrate on. There are various different and personality-diverse characters in Of Mice and Men, I related to Candy because he is quiet and is mutual friends with everyone. There are also many situations in this story to relate to such as difficulties of loss and of coping with peers which are some things we can all relate to. I was very engrossed in the story perhaps because of its genre which I would say is action-adventure. The book made me further enjoy the genre because it was interesting and filled with action that I just couldn't get enough of. The style of writing was different from other books. For example, Steinbeck used a lot of slang when the characters talked. I enjoyed the writing because it was different from things I have read before and provided some variety in my reading. But also in the story there were cliffhangers and surprises that kept me engaged. In the end of the book when one of the biggest climax occurs, we are left on a cliffhanger at the end of the chapter which adds further surprise to the events that just occurred. Overall the story was anything but boring because it kept me emerged in the lives of the characters I was following. I enjoyed this book because of its brilliant storyline, relatable characters, and genius plot. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.
