Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron was my childhood. Every child and adult should watch this movie and gain the important life lessons found in this film. Themes such as winning back freedom, bringing awareness to the treatment of animals, heroism, and unconditional loyalty, are displayed throughout the movie.

My first impression was surface level, nothing more than a movie about a horse. After re-watching this many times, I have fallen in love with the plot and characters.

I later realized that this was so much more than a movie. It caters to all ages, ethnicities, genders, and political/religious affiliations. The main characters are Spirit (the horse) and Little Creek (Native American). They go on a journey together to win back their freedom. We see the challenges they overcome and how Spirit inspired Little Creek to fight for his rights.

History is covered in this movie through multiple perspectives. For instance, it teaches the importance of unconditional loyalty through his journey of being captured, getting enslaved, and fighting for his and his family’s freedom. In addition, it shows the perspective of Spirit and how animals were treated back then. Which was nothing more than a tool for soldiers to use.

Spirit tells the story of the old West and we see Little Creek’s point of view as well. We read books and watch a movie about history, but this movie shows us the life of a Native American in that time and what they fought for. It brings culture and important knowledge often left out in history movies.

Some people might be concerned about the smoking and gun violence shown. We have to keep in mind that this movie was made in 2002 when smoking was still normalized. It is not overly gory and rated G, so family-friendly.

Additionally, it talks about issues people face in real life. For example, when looking at the mother of Spirit–she is a single mother and has to raise Spirit by herself. She is judged, but eventually, it pays off when her son becomes the leader of the herd. The soaring eagle who guided Spirit throughout his journey was a great mentor for him just like we have our people in real life.

I love the characters and am invested in their thrilling adventure throughout the movie. There are hardships, but rewards and lessons are to be learned. Throughout Spirit’s journey, he only had the goal of getting back to his family, and eventually, he is successful. He learns so much through his journey, just like in life. Overall this movie is symbolic and great for families to watch together. I strongly recommend this movie and give it a 5/5 rating.
