The film centers around Calvin, the owner of the barbershop, as he navigates the challenges of running a business, the themes of community, family, and learning to love things we don’t appreciate in the moment.

The main cast includes Ice Cube and his great performance as Calvin, which embodies the character and the struggles they carry along the story. Calvin Palmer Jr. took ownership of his late father's barbershop, and he doesn't like owning the shop. His dream is to produce music, and he doesn’t think he can do that while owning the shop. In need of money and to get this shop out of his hands, a local loan shark makes Calvin an offer he can’t refuse. This puts Calvin in a bad position it’s makes him choose over something he didn’t think would be so vital in this part of his life.
This movie has a consistent theme of the importance of self-realization. One of the characters that shows this well is Dinka. Dinka is one of the main characters and works at the barbershop in the movie whoHe tries so hard to charm another character named Terri but fails multiple times. After many failed attempts Dinka realized that she wouldn’t give him a chance, so he moved on to a better thing improving on himself. This shows the self-realization them pretty good by putting a challenge in front of a character and proving to this character that they can break through that challenge in the best ways.
