Fried Green Tomatoes MAG
This is a touching story which maintains a very realistic balance. It is a story of life, friends, death, and inspiration. The characters are amiable and witty, and the setting possesses a Southern charm that gives the movie a sweet tone. Also, many social issues are displayed: racism, spouse abuse, and sex discrimination.
The plot is revealed through flashbacks. While visiting a nursing home, a middle-aged housewife (Kathy Bates) is befriended by a feisty elderly woman (Jessica Tandy). Tandy's storytelling intrigues Bates to return, thus disclosing the story in segments. The past is combined with the present in a weave that never becomes boring or irritating. Like Bates, the viewer becomes captivated by Tandy's story.
Overall, this movie deserves a high rating for its fine acting and wraparound plot. It is interesting to ponder the similarity between the Bates-Tandy and the Masterson-Parker friendships. In both cases, companionship offers meaning to each individual. The combination of both humor and tragedy offers a believeable and genuine movie. Although the message in this movie takes time to understand, it is well worth the wait. n
