Sweet Briar College: Explore Engineering
Explore Engineering is an immersive engineering design experience for students in grades 9-12. Students will work closely with engineering faculty and undergraduate students learn the basics of electrical circuits, machine shop skills, computer programming, and rapid prototyping such as 3D printing and laser cutting. Students will then utilize those skills to workshop their very own engineering projects from brainstorming and prototyping to the final build.
Over the past 10 years, more than 500 students have attended an Explore Engineering event, designing and building devices such as computer-controlled smart wearables, mechatronic weather stations, and electromechanical drawing machines. The theme for 2024 is “Mechatronic Musical Instruments.”
Outside of class time, we have plenty of fun activities to offer like swimming at the campus lake, game nights, paint parties, and watching movies in our campus theater.
Sweet Briar College is one of only two women’s colleges with an ABET accredited engineering program, so when you participate in Explore Engineering, you will receive 1 college credit in engineering! Whether you already have some experience or you’re completely new to engineering, we’d love to have you at Sweet Briar.
The cost to participate is $950, but we have a limited number of scholarships available for those with significant financial need. Check out our website for more information on how to register for Explore Engineering or how to apply for our scholarships. Space is limited and registration occurs on a rolling basis until the course is full.
