Lost Innocence (A Villanelle)
The sweetest flowers will not bloom again;
the world is missing twenty blossoms now.
We cry for a garden’s lost innocence.
Just barely beginning, now it’s their end;
life never got the chance to sniff them out.
The sweetest flowers will not bloom again.
Though time must pass before grieved hearts can mend,
their memory lives on; we shan’t forget.
We cry for a garden’s lost innocence.
Picked far too early and their stems still short,
soft petals flutter gently to the ground.
The sweetest flowers will not bloom again.
Hold fast to all your family and friends;
hold fast to the flowers you never met.
We cry for a garden’s lost innocence.
I know that love is not something pretend;
let’s pray our world’s peace can someday be found.
The sweetest flowers will not bloom again;
we cry for a garden’s lost innocence.
