Cold iron,
steady in shaking hands
as it is turned, hearing the door creak open.

A secret spot,
where deepest thoughts are kept protected
as the reply to the lock lies tenderly on a collarbone.

Rust shows the age of the family heirloom.

Freedom, dangling from a hook,
jingling,
as the breeze blows it hard against prison walls.

A thief's delight,
seeing shining metal,
glinting through the dark doormat.

Sadness and tears,
as it is given up slowly,
wishing the young couple good luck.

often misplaced,
creating havoc in the home.

Map spread widely over green carpeted ground,
harshly marked with a red X,
hunting for treasure.

First day of school,
handed in trust to the eldest child.

Held in sweaty hand,
standing at the doorstep,
reflecting the deep green of the uniform and cap,
awaiting reception.

Staring, eyes full of remorse,
at the cabinet, locked.
Indulge or restrain?

Made the decision,
chosen the ring out of the closed glass case,
listening for the long awaited, "Yes!"
