Clouds of thick smoke surround us as we caress…ashes flutter to the ground.
Nicki, sweetheart, I must taste you...breathe you...each day and night.
Addicted…you stole my strong lungs. Your nicotine ravaged me.


The author's comments:

This poem is a Sijo, a cousin of the Haiku. It includes two lines building up a story and a third line containing a plot twist. This poem is written from the point of view of a man who loves a girl named Nicki. The plot twist is that she is a cigarrette, and he has lung cancer.
