Flash Flood

Asleep.
I feel icy fingers
clawing.
Grabbing me.
Now pulling,
pushing against my side.
I awaken,
to feel the water
cover my head,
crush me in an iron grip,
steal the oxygen from my lungs.
Thrashing wildly,
fighting to break the surface.
Energy drains from me,
as I use the last bit,
and slip,
powerless,
into it's depths.
Flash flood now receding,
a strong hand
carries me out of the wreckage,
I am still drained.
The last thing I hear,
helicopter blades,
incoherent screaming.
Blackness.
Nothingness.
Death.

The author's comments:
I wrote this poem roughly based on a dream that I had in first grade. It inspired me even more when I heard about the flooding in Indiana a couple years ago. I decided to write this poem for anyone who has had a terrifying water related experience and as a memorial for those people who lost their lives in floods.
