Open minds by Susan Kane Quinn is the first book in the "Mindjack" trilogy. It is an excellent book. It takes place in the future, where because of the chemicals in our environment almost everyone is a "reader". Chemicals that were in our environment starting a massive genetic mutation and spawned generations of mind readers. During puberty children begin to send out their thoughts and hear the thoughts of others involuntarily; because of this almost all conversations take place mentally. However some children never go through this change, these children that don’t are called "Zeros." The story starts out with the main character Kira who doesn’t quite fit in with everyone else. The reason why she doesn't fit in isn't because of her hair, clothes, personality, or the way she speaks. Kira initially assumes she is a "Zero" and because of this she is ignored and bullied and assumes she will never have a life out of high school. Strange things start to happening to Kira and she discovers while not being able to read minds she has an ability that just might be even better than simply reading minds. She can "Mind Jack," an ability that enable her to go into people's mind and control them, tell them what to do and what to believe even what to feel. She isn't a naturally controlling person she didn’t really use it at first. She felt it would be wrong. However when another character comes into her life and begins helping her and clarifying things she must make a decision: Be a "Zero" for the rest of her life or accept and embrace her "Mindjacking" ability. She finds out that there are jackers all around but they choose to leave incognito as readers because otherwise they get picked up by the military and sent to "Jacker" camps. In the camps they are tested on and treated like the early readers were if not worse than that. This book has tons of suspense and is a great book to read. Anyone looking for a book to get lost in look no further this is the one.
